What is Dysport? + An Exclusive Interview With Dr. Zeichner
No matter your age, we are consistently making facial expressions that eventually turn into frown lines and wrinkles. Thankfully, there is a treatment that helps reduce the appearance of these fine lines that can become more prominent over time. Dysport is an FDA-approved injectable treatment that relaxes the muscles that make you look angry or sad, temporarily improving the appearance of moderate to severe frown lines. I was given the opportunity to discuss this treatment with the Director of Cosmetic & Clinical Research in Dermatology at Mount Sinai Hospital, Dr. Zeichner!

What is Dysport?
Dysport is a treatment that can help improve the appearance of lines and wrinkles on your face caused by facial expressions, like furrowing your eyebrows. It works by relaxing the muscles so the overlying skin does not fold on itself. Think of it as opening up your folded tablecloth from the closet and letting it blow in the wind on a clothesline.

How does it work to treat frown lines?
If your skin is not folded from making those facial expressions, then wrinkles will not become edged in. Plus, your skin helps fill in lines that have already developed when you get the treatment.

Do you see results right away?
Results take up to two weeks to kick in fully and generally last somewhere between three and five months per session

How long does it last? How often do you need touch ups?
Think of Dysport as a vacation for your skin. While it is nice to be on vacation All year round, most people take vacation a few times per year. While ideally, I would have patience come back as soon as their treatment wears off, it all comes down to budget. Most people are coming in at least twice per year.

Do you see many women in their 20s/30s coming in for Dysport and other injectable treatments? Why is that?
My largest growing group of cosmetic patients coming in to the office are women looking to treat their wrinkles for their 30th birthday. This may have to do with a greater awareness of available treatments or more comfort in the safety and effectiveness of these treatments.

What are fillers and how are they different from Dysport?
While Dysport relaxes muscles and addresses lines caused by facial expressions, fillers help restore lost volume. With age, the cheeks drop, the under eyes become hollow, and smile lines and jowls start to set in. Fillers like Restylane help plump these hollows, lift the drooping face, and restore useful facial volume.
